Article Icon 1Judge Rejects DPS Lawsuit

A lawsuit filed by Denver Public Schools (DPS) seeking to prohibit immigration enforcement actions on school grounds has been turned down by a federal judge.

On Feb. 12, DPS requested an injunction to restore a Biden-era policy preventing immigration authorities from making arrests at schools, arguing its rescission had caused attendance to decline.

Judge Daniel Domenico denied the request on Friday, ruling that DPS failed to prove that a drop in attendance was due to the policy change.

So far, no arrests have been made at schools under the new policy, according to a group representing large urban school districts.

A Denver man was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday for a scam that robbed an 80-year-old Highlands Ranch woman of her life savings.

Posing as a federal agent, Sagar Patel convinced the woman that her bank account was compromised and that she needed to purchase two gold bars, worth over $126,000 together.

The woman then handed over the bars to Patel. During the handoff, she recorded his vehicle’s license plate, which eventually led to his arrest.

Patel, who is in the country illegally, had been placed on immigration hold in 2024. He is now being investigated for similar crimes in other states.

Article Icon 1Lawmakers Debate Furniture Spending

Democratic lawmakers defended a plan to spend millions on furniture during a hearing at the State Capitol on Friday.

As part of a plan to move the offices of lawmakers and legislative staff, $4 million is budgeted for furniture.

State Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer, a Republican, criticized the spending, calling attention to the state’s $1.2 billion budget shortfall and recent cuts to childcare programs.

Senate President James Coleman defended the expenditure, which he said is “part of responsible long-term stewardship of government facilities.”
