Question: How many abandoned mines are there in Colorado?

Answer: The Colorado Geological Survey estimates there to be around 23,000 abandoned mine sites in the state. Despite leaving environmental and physical hazards, the number of mines highlights the rich history of Colorado’s gold rush period, which is largely credited with leading to the creation of the Colorado Territory and ultimately to the admission of Colorado as a U.S. state.
