Article Icon 1Settlement Clears Way for Reservoir Project

A lawsuit seeking to block construction of the Glade Reservoir has been settled, clearing the way for the project to proceed.

The reservoir is part of the $2 billion Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP), which will provide water to fifteen Northern Colorado communities, serving a projected 500,000 residents by 2050.

Environmental concerns led advocacy group Save the Poudre to sue over potential damage to the Poudre River. The lawsuit was dropped after Northern Water agreed to a $100 million settlement for river conservation efforts.

Construction, which begins in 2026, will require relocating a section of Highway 287 northwest of Fort Collins. Water is expected to begin filling the new reservoir within four years.

Article Icon 1Trafficking Cases Cause Concern

Two criminal cases involving human trafficking appeared in Colorado courts last week, raising concerns about the crime’s presence in the state.

William Tidwell was sentenced to 20 years after his conviction in the 17th Judicial District in Adams County for charges including human trafficking and sexual exploitation of a child. Kenneth Noel, whose sentencing is in May, was convicted by a jury in the 18th Judicial District in Arapahoe County of attempting human trafficking of a minor, among others.

Jenelle Goodrich, founder of a nonprofit that provides case management to human trafficking victims, says that Denver is one of the major cities with “blades,” or areas where commercial trafficking is common.

According to a recent study, Colorado had the nation’s 10th highest number of trafficking reports in 2023, when the incidents reached a 15-year peak in the U.S.

Article Icon 1Bill Seeks to Prohibit Traffic Stop Question

A bill has been introduced to the state legislature that would prohibit police officers from asking drivers if they know why they were pulled over during traffic stops.

One of the bill’s goals is to protect officers by cutting down on time spent at the roadside. This year alone, multiple patrol cars have been struck during traffic stops.

Sen. Faith Winter says the bill is also meant to increase transparency and safeguard drivers’ rights, as many mistakenly believe they are required to answer the question.

Similar laws have already passed in three other states. The bill, which was introduced Feb. 12, will be read before the House Judiciary Committee today.
