Schools Struggle with Chosen Name Policies
School districts across the state are struggling to implement a law requiring public schools to honor students’ requests to be addressed by their chosen names, even if they differ from legal ones, focusing on LGBTQ+ students.
However, the legislation doesn’t specify a timeline or deadline for school districts to adopt the required policies.
“The bill, frankly, was written in a loose framework with a lack of definition that has caused chaos in all sorts of school districts with all sorts of perspectives and ideologies because it lacks clarity,” said Brad Miller, an attorney for School District 49.
Eight districts in the region have adopted chosen name policies, but others, like Colorado Springs D-11, still face debates over parental consent, staff objections, and constitutional concerns.
