Article Icon 1Sun Glare Prompts I-70 Closures

The bright morning sun glare from early November through February is causing safety concerns along eastbound Interstate 70, prompting daily closures.

Every morning between sunrise and 8:30 a.m., drivers can expect I-70 eastbound approaching Floyd Hill east of Idaho Springs to be closed.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the closures—from Mile Marker 248 to 244—are necessary to prevent accidents caused by reduced visibility.

Traffic will be rerouted at Exit 244 onto US 6 or the I-70 Frontage Road (US 40). Truck drivers should note height restrictions on US 6 tunnels. The closures typically last 45 minutes to an hour on sunny mornings.

Article Icon 1Snowy Thanksgiving Week Weather Predicted

Snow is forecast to impact Colorado during Thanksgiving week.

The mountains could see heavy, long-lasting snow from Sunday through Wednesday, with 1 to 2 feet possible, significantly impacting travel.

Meanwhile, Denver will enjoy warm fall weather through the weekend, with highs near 70 degrees on Saturday before a Pacific storm brings cooler temperatures and a light rain-snow mix on Sunday night and Monday morning.

Little to no accumulation is expected in Denver until a second storm on Wednesday, which could bring accumulating snow just in time for the Thanksgiving travel rush.

The storm system will lead to a chilly Thanksgiving, with highs likely only in the 30s on Thanksgiving Day.

Denver International Airport (DIA) is bracing for a busy Thanksgiving travel season. Over 844,000 passengers are expected between Nov. 22 and Dec. 2, a 7.5% increase from last year.

The busiest days will be Nov. 22, Nov. 30, and Dec. 1, with Dec. 1 forecasted to see 90,539 passengers, making it the second busiest day at DIA this year.

Peak security times are 3 to 4:30 a.m., 7 to 9 a.m., and 3 to 5 p.m. Travelers are encouraged to arrive at least two hours before boarding to navigate security smoothly.

Three checkpoints will remain operational, offering pre-check and accessibility needs features, though the A-Bridge checkpoint will close Dec. 9 for construction.
