Article Icon 1State Lab Loses License Over Fake Data

The EPA has revoked the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s water lab certification after a chemist allegedly manipulated data, impacting thousands of tests since 2020.

The altered results affected measurements for metals such as copper, barium, and chromium, sparking concerns about water safety across the state.

Although the manipulation was discovered last December, the state’s response was delayed due to communication breakdowns, a culture of fear, and reluctance to report internal issues.

State health officials estimate the data issues may impact as many as 3% of Colorado’s 2,000 public water systems.

Article Icon 1Denver Legalizes Accessory Dwelling Units

Denver City Council has approved a citywide law allowing accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in all single-family neighborhoods.

Starting Dec. 16, homeowners can build ADUs without the need for rezoning, streamlining the process for creating backyard cottages, garage conversions, and other secondary homes.

While permits and design rules still apply, neighborhood objections will no longer block projects.

Experts estimate Denver could see 200–300 new ADUs built annually. The state offers $13 million in grants to help, and Denver has a pilot program with pre-designed plans and financial aid for homeowners.
