Article Icon 1DOJ to Review Tina Peters Case

In a court filing on Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) stated that it will review the prosecution of Tina Peters, a former Mesa County clerk convicted of election interference crimes in 2024.

Peters was convicted in October of breaching confidential election data, which she claims was done to uncover fraud in the 2020 general election. She pleaded not guilty to all counts in 2022.

In its court filing, the DOJ said it will review whether Peters’ prosecution was “oriented more toward inflicting political pain” than seeking justice. The statement also cites a recent executive order titled “Ending the Weaponization of the Federal Government.”

The review comes less than a month after Peters appealed her sentence in federal court. She’s currently serving a six-month sentence ahead of a nine-year term.

Article Icon 12024 Record Year for Consumer Complaints

Consumer complaints to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office (AG) increased by 20% in 2024, hitting a record 24,473 reports of unauthorized subscriptions, junk fees, and fraud.

Though retail sales kept their spot as the top category, the biggest jumps were in debt collection, impostor scams, and real estate—the last of which surged by 145%.

Several recent lawsuits by the AG targeted real estate companies over fraud and junk fees. Impostor scams, on the other hand, are increasingly common due to advances in technology and frequent data breaches.

Consumer complaints are monitored by the AG for trends, which then become the basis of investigations. Complaints can be filed at StopFraudColorado.gov.

Article Icon 1Blowing Snow Causes Outages, Closures

Thousands in Colorado went without power Monday night as strong winds led to outages across the region.

Around 11 p.m. Monday, 82 outages affecting nearly 7,000 Xcel Energy customers were recorded in the Denver metro area. By early Tuesday, that dropped to 60 outages affecting around 2,500.

As blizzard conditions developed Tuesday, heavy snow and 70 mph winds resulted in whiteout conditions on the Eastern Plains, prompting several road closures south and east of Denver. See photos of the blizzard conditions here.

Parts of I-70 were closed due to safety concerns, and at least two roads were closed due to crashes. Dozens of schools were also closed or delayed due to the weather.
