Trump Targets Denver on Immigration

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday cracking down on so-called sanctuary cities, just as the administration pulled $24 million in federal grants previously promised to Denver for migrant sheltering.

In a letter to city leadership, the Department of Homeland Security said the grants—used partly to house an influx of 43,000 migrants—supported illegal immigration and didn’t align with the agency’s mission to secure the border.

The order directs federal agencies to identify sanctuary cities, which would likely include Denver, and give them a chance to comply with immigration law or risk losing federal funding.

Legal challenges are already underway, as a federal judge blocked the administration from denying funds to sanctuary jurisdictions last week.

Polis Signs Budget with Wolf Footnote

Gov. Jared Polis on Monday signed the state’s $43.9 billion budget, which includes a legislative footnote urging a pause in wolf reintroduction until steps are taken to prevent future livestock depredation.

The footnote responds to growing concerns from ranchers and lawmakers over livestock losses and ballooning compensation costs. The program’s yearly cost has already exceeded $2 million, nearly tripling initial estimates.

To mitigate future costs, the budget directs Colorado Parks and Wildlife to pause wolf releases until it fully implements preventative measures, such as deploying range riders to limit livestock losses.

While the directive came as a budget footnote, which is technically nonbinding, Polis indicated agencies should comply where “practicable and appropriate.”

Greeley Eyes River Revival

Greeley is developing a plan to revamp its stretch of the Cache la Poudre River, following the example of nearby cities that have turned it into a recreation hub.

Part of the plan is to “give the Poudre more room,” expanding its floodplains by removing or redesigning nearby infrastructure. Planners say this will ease flood risk, restore ecosystems, and reconnect the river with its natural flow.

Inspired by riverside parks in Fort Collins and Windsor, Greeley also hopes to foster recreation along the Poudre, with amenities for paddleboarding, tubing, fishing access, and trails.

Funding could come from the recent Northern Water settlement, which sets aside $100 million for river restoration and recreation. Greeley’s council could vote on the project as soon as this fall.
