Article Icon 1Student Identified in CSU Shooting

Investigators identified the man shot by a CSU police sergeant near Newton Plaza on Oct. 12 as Brooks Bottenhorn, a 22-year-old student at the university.

According to the Critical Incident Response Team, Bottenhorn fired a round into the microbiology building, then walked toward the sergeant while still holding a handgun.

The sergeant fired several shots, striking Bottenhorn, and then gave first aid. He was seriously injured but is expected to survive and is still being treated.

Police had previously said Bottenhorn was not a CSU student. Prosecutors charged him with six counts, including menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, and reckless endangerment.

Article Icon 1Aurora Designated WWII Heritage City

The National Park Service named Aurora an American World War II Heritage City on Oct. 16, one of 10 communities nationwide to receive the 2026 designation.

This year’s honorees stretch from Alaska to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Since the program began in 2020, communities in 46 states and two territories have been recognized.

During the war, residents planted victory gardens, trained in civil defense, and organized drives, while young people pitched in with activities for Fitzsimons patients.

The designation honors Aurora’s wartime role, which included training troops at Lowry and Buckley fields and caring for the wounded at Fitzsimons General Hospital.

Article Icon 1Broncos Mourn Former GM John Beake

John Beake, who helped guide the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in the late 1990s, has died at 87, the team said Saturday. No cause of death was given.

Beake spent 22 years with the team and 14 as general manager, a stretch with five Super Bowl appearances, seven division titles, and 12 playoff berths.

He helped trade for John Elway in 1983. Denver lost three Super Bowls in the 1980s before winning Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII after the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Beake was a trusted adviser to Hall of Fame owner Pat Bowlen, and team historian Jim Saccomano said the Broncos Ring of Fame was his idea.
