Article Icon 1Verdict Reached in Andrew Buen Retrial

Andrew Buen, the former deputy charged in the 2022 shooting death of Christian Glass, was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide by a Clear Creek County jury on Thursday.

Glass had called 911 when his vehicle became stuck on the side of the road in Silver Plume. After hours of non-cooperation with police, he brandished a knife, at which point Buen fired shots into the car.

Buen’s retrial began this month after his first trial ended in a partial hung-jury. He was originally charged with second-degree murder.

His sentencing is scheduled for April.

Article Icon 1Jan. 6 Resolution Passes After Debate

The Colorado House of Representatives passed a Democrat-led resolution on Friday condemning President Trump’s pardons of those involved in the Jan. 6 events at the Capitol.

The resolution passed 41-23 along party lines after more than five hours of debate. It states, in part, that “pardons erode the rule of law and signal an acceptance of political violence.”

Multiple changes to the resolution’s phrasing were proposed by House Republicans, but all were rejected. In protest of the bill, Republicans sat facing away from the speaker while it was read.

GOP members criticized the resolution as “political theater,” calling it a distraction from real issues faced by Coloradans like the cost of living or the state’s $1 billion budget shortfall.

Article Icon 1CU Develops Breath Sensor to Detect Illness

Physicists at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) have developed a gas sensor that can detect illnesses by analyzing samples of human breath.

The Modulated Ringdown Comb Interferometry, or MRCI, works by shining a laser through a gas sample, creating a “fingerprint” based on the molecules present. During the pandemic, the team used a similar device to screen for COVID-19 with 85% accuracy.

MRCI is now being tested at Children’s Hospital Colorado to see if it can accurately distinguish between illnesses like pneumonia and asthma.

Researchers want to take the technique “even further,” hoping it will facilitate early detection of diseases like lung cancer and one day become part of “our daily lives.”
