Colorado and Denver on Sanctuary List

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Aug. 13 sent warning letters to all sanctuary jurisdictions identified by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Aug. 5.

The DOJ includes Colorado and Denver on its list of 32 sanctuary jurisdictions. The initial list, published in May, was heavily amended and later removed.

The letters notify each jurisdiction of its status, warn that funding may be withheld unless it complies with federal immigration law, and require a response by tomorrow, Aug. 19, outlining the steps they are taking to eliminate sanctuary policies.

Colorado and Denver are also the targets of a lawsuit filed by the DOJ in May seeking to overturn alleged sanctuary policies.

Containment Grows in Elk, Lee Fires

Increased rainfall and humidity helped moderate fire behavior on the Western Slope, allowing for significant containment gains in the Lee and Elk Fires.

As of Saturday night, the Lee Fire was 42% contained, up from 3% Thursday and 12% Friday. Although it’s grown to more than 137,000 acres, fire lines have held, meaning all growth has occurred within containment borders.

The nearby Elk Fire, 14,518 acres, reached 100% containment on Saturday. The increased containment allowed authorities to reopen Highway 13 that morning with restrictions.

Last Thursday, Gov. Polis expanded disaster declarations to cover all of Colorado, boosting resources for wildfires statewide.

Frank Day, Boulder Restaurateur, Dies at 93

Frank Day, a Boulder restaurateur responsible for founding restaurants that grew into national chains and for helping jumpstart Colorado’s craft beer industry, has died at the age of 93.

A Colorado native who grew up in Chicago, Day founded Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom; Boulder’s first brewpub, Walnut Brewery; and Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, now a national chain.

Over his five-decade career, Day operated more than 80 hospitality businesses, including the historic Hotel Boulderado, which he took over in 1980 and sold earlier this year.

Day was inducted into the Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame in 2024. Watch his interview with the organization here.
