Article Icon 1Denver’s ‘Sanctuary Status” Investigated

Denver is one of four U.S. cities—along with Chicago, Boston and New York City—under investigation for its status as a “sanctuary” jurisdiction for illegal immigrants.

According to the U.S. House Oversight Committee, Denver, like other sanctuary cities, places “limits on how much they are willing to cooperate” with federal immigration authorities.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, who indicated earlier this year that ICE would receive conditional support from local law enforcement, has agreed to testify before the committee on Mar. 5.

Present on the committee is Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, who posted on social media that “sanctuary cities like Denver are quickly coming to an end” under the new administration’s immigration policies.

A Denver man charged with shooting a fellow Tesla driver at a supercharger station was found not guilty of murder on Wednesday by a jury in Jefferson County District Court.

Jeremy Alan Smith was arrested in December 2023 for the suspected murder of Adam Fresquez, whom Smith shot twice in the back when an incident of road rage turned violent.

Smith claims he acted in self-defense after Fresquez, confronting him at the station, pulled a gun and approached his vehicle.

The trial lasted six days, with jury deliberations taking less than one day. Smith was acquitted of both second-degree murder and manslaughter, and was released from custody on Wednesday morning.

Article Icon 1Strikes Threaten Girl Scouts Sales

Strikes at King Soopers stores could impact the Girl Scouts of Colorado, who stand to lose millions in sales if the strikes continue.

King Soopers informed the Girl Scouts this Wednesday, one day before the strikes began, that their troops would not be able to set up booths outside the 77 strike-affected stores.

Girl Scouts CEO Leanna Clark says the lost booths could noticeably undermine fundraising efforts, particularly as Super Bowl weekend is the troop’s busiest sales period.

Last year, cookie sales generated around $2 million—money that funds both service projects and personal goals. To help mitigate losses, scouts are encouraging online purchases as they search for alternative booth locations.
