Monument Ridge West LLC, the developer proposing to build Colorado’s second Buc-ee’s location in the town of Palmer Lake, has withdrawn its annexation application, the town said Wednesday.

The withdrawal follows more than a year of negotiations, debates, and controversy over the proposed 120-pump gas station and supersized convenience store. Pushback against the project led to protests, a lawsuit, a recall election, and the former mayor’s resignation.

Opponents argued the travel center would put unsustainable demand on the town’s resources, including its water supply, and undermine conservation efforts. Proponents felt it would boost business and tax revenue.

A Buc-ee’s representative said there are still plans to build a store in the region, but the details are unclear. Other southern Colorado communities have said they would be open to the opportunity.

Nix, a shelter dog in Colorado Springs, will play in Puppy Bowl XXII, an annual pre-Super Bowl televised event featuring more than 100 adoptable dogs. See photos here.

Nix is the only Colorado shelter dog taking the field this Sunday. He’ll represent the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) as well as Team Fluff, which will play against Team Ruff.

This year’s three-hour show will spotlight 150 dogs from 72 shelters and, for the first time, include a special exhibition game for senior dogs. HSPPR confirmed Nix has already been adopted.

The Puppy Bowl will air Sunday, Feb. 8, at 12 p.m., ahead of the Super Bowl kickoff.
