Colorado’s general election is today, with races for U.S. Senate, governor, Congress, and the legislature on the ballot. U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, faces Republican Mark Baisley.

Democrat Phil Weiser, the state’s attorney general, and Republican Victor Marx are the major-party nominees for governor. Weiser made his case in a debate that Marx skipped.

Voters will also decide 14 statewide ballot measures on taxes, crime, elections, and civil rights. Proposals include a graduated income tax, fentanyl penalties, and mail ballot ID rules.

Article Icon 1Supreme Court Hears Catholic Schools Case

The U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments today in a challenge by Catholic preschools in Colorado that were left out of the state’s universal preschool program.

Parishes in Littleton and Lakewood and the Archdiocese of Denver say the state’s nondiscrimination policy for the program violates their First Amendment rights.

In a filing, Colorado said participating preschools must enroll children regardless of the race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity of the child or parents.

A federal appeals court ruled for the state, and the families and schools lost in lower courts. A Supreme Court ruling in the case is expected by June 2027.

Colorado Task Force 1 deployed a 17-member swiftwater and flood rescue team Monday to help with historic flooding across southern and southwestern Colorado.

The San Juan River at Pagosa Springs crested below historic forecasts but stood near 16 feet Monday, above major flood levels. Evacuations hit Archuleta, Conejos, La Plata, and Rio Grande counties.

Flooding in Pagosa Springs closed a voting center and a drop box. New voting centers opened at the Archuleta County Courthouse and the Pine River Library in Bayfield.
