Article Icon 1Court Hears Amendment 87 Lawsuit

A Denver judge was set to hear arguments Monday in a lawsuit seeking to pull Amendment 87, the graduated income tax proposal, off the November ballot.

Arapahoe County resident Michael Hancock challenges 9,849 signatures gathered by 69 paid circulators he says were improperly registered or trained.

The measure would replace Colorado’s flat 4.4% income tax with graduated rates topping out at 8.4%, raising about $2 billion a year for education, healthcare, and childcare.

Article Icon 1I-270 Overhaul Set to Begin

CDOT is ready to start a more than $800 million upgrade of Interstate 270, which carries over 100,000 drivers daily and has never had a major overhaul since opening in 1965.

Plans call for replacing 12 aging bridges, adding an express lane each way, and rebuilding the Vasquez interchange, with mostly overnight work starting at month’s end.

Meanwhile, out west, the Floyd Hill project will close westbound I-70 at U.S. 6 from 9 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. Wednesday, while the eastbound Hidden Valley off-ramp remains closed through 6 a.m. Friday.

CDOT also said seasonal sun glare detours on eastbound I-70 at Floyd Hill could start Nov. 1, with a preparatory safety traffic hold set for around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Article Icon 1 Bike Parade Honors Distracted Driving Victim

Ollie’s Bike Parade kicked off Fort Collins Open Streets on Sunday, honoring 10-year-old Oliver Stratton, who was killed by a distracted driver while biking in Timnath in 2023.

The driver, teacher Amy Weiss, was convicted of careless driving resulting in death in 2024 and was later sentenced to a year in jail with work release.

The parade began in 2024 in the family’s Timnath Ranch neighborhood and moved to Colorado State University a year later before joining Open Streets this year.

The nonprofit behind it now advocates against distracted driving and provides care boxes to families who lose loved ones in bicycle crashes.
