Standoff over Aurora ICE TB Case

Adams County health investigators have gone six weeks without hearing from the GEO Group about a tuberculosis case at the Aurora immigration detention center it runs for ICE.

Chief medical officer Dr. Wendy Bamberg said officials still don’t know where the person who tested positive is, whether they’re being treated, or how many detainees and employees were exposed.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, in Colorado this week, disputed that there’s a problem. “There’s no tuberculosis cases right now,” he said.

DHS has said the detainee was treated, cleared, and removed from the country, and that state officials have not been let inside since.

Mines Lands $32.7 Million Minerals Hub

The Colorado School of Mines will receive a proposed $32.7 million from the War Department to build a critical minerals innovation and commercialization hub.

That award is part of more than $80 million going to mining and metallurgy schools, announced alongside a separate $100 million Energy Department grant program for mining workforce training.

President Trump named Mines among roughly a dozen institutions sharing that $100 million at a Washington roundtable Friday. He said half the current mining workforce is set to retire within three years.

University president Paul Johnson said the money will strengthen mining programs and help pay for a 50,000-square-foot facility built to move new technology toward commercial use.

Blowtorch Sparks Fire at Broomfield Church

A person burning weeds with a blowtorch accidentally set fire to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Broomfield on Friday morning, fire officials said.

North Metro Fire Rescue District crews reached the church at 120th and Main Street around 9:22 a.m. The fire started in a decorative vegetation bed outside and spread into the building.

Everyone inside got out safely and no one was hurt. The church took smoke, fire, and water damage, and crews had the fire out by about 11:30 a.m.

Broomfield sits under Level 1 fire restrictions, which ban open flames on public and private property. The fire district lists blowtorches among the prohibited items and asked residents not to burn weeds or trash.
