Golden Officer Injured in Shooting

A Golden police officer was shot early Saturday after a man opened fire on officers at a Circle K on West Colfax Avenue. The officers returned fire, killing him.

Police were called to the gas station around 2:30 a.m. on a report of a man with a handgun. Officers said there was no active threat at the time of the call.

Officer Greg Metzel was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fellow officers gathered and cheered as he was released Sunday afternoon.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating. A neighbor said he heard five or six gunshots and saw bullet damage nearby.

Deadly Fire Possibly Linked to Microburst

A grass fire near the U.S. 34 and U.S. 85 interchange in Greeley killed a 45-year-old woman and critically injured a 48-year-old man Saturday afternoon.

Greeley police and fire crews were called around 1:39 p.m. to a fast-moving blaze spreading across roughly 15 acres of open land near unhoused encampments.

Crews faced delays from live Xcel Energy power lines, and all lanes at the highway interchange closed for several hours. The road has since reopened.

Xcel said a microburst hit the area around the time of the fire, damaging poles and cutting power to more than 3,500 customers. Investigators are weighing a possible link.

Good Samaritan Saves Puppy

Good Samaritan Caleb Schwartz found a stray Labrador retriever puppy with severe swelling along her jaw and the side of her face after a rattlesnake bite.

Schwartz rushed her to Pets Emergency Hospital, where staff gave antivenom and pain medication before a Weld County animal control officer drove her to NOCO Humane.

Named Keota, the puppy could not open her mouth comfortably, so the shelter’s care team softened her food while veterinary staff monitored her closely.

She improved day by day, shook off an intestinal parasite about a week later, and is now at home with a loving new family.
