Weiser Announces Running Mate

Attorney General Phil Weiser, Colorado Democrats’ gubernatorial nominee, named Jefferson County Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper as his running mate in the governor’s race Wednesday.

Dahlkemper, first elected to the county commission in 2018, previously worked as a journalist for Colorado Public Radio and served on the Jefferson County school board.

Weiser faces the Republican candidate, Victor Marx, in November. Neither Marx nor Unity Party candidate Jeff Peckman has announced running mates.

If Weiser is elected in November, Dahlkemper will be his lieutenant governor. Colorado last elected a Republican governor in 2002.

Lawsuit Challenges New ICE Center

Nonprofit Together Colorado and a Hudson resident say they’ve filed a lawsuit urging the Town of Hudson to block the proposed Big Horn detention center.

Earlier this month, DHS awarded GEO Group a five-year, $528.7 million contract to reopen the shuttered 1,200-bed facility, which would nearly double the state’s ICE detention capacity.

The lawsuit argues the town has failed to enforce its own zoning code, letting ICE and GEO Group bypass local laws. The town has repeatedly said it has no authority over the project.

GEO Group is separately suing Colorado in federal court, arguing a new state law imposing additional oversight requirements on ICE detention facilities is unconstitutional.

Rain Soaks Front Range

Monsoon-charged storms brought flash flood warnings to the Front Range and parts of the Eastern Plains Wednesday, with some areas seeing 1 to 3 inches of rain in an hour.

The National Weather Service warned of “horrific” potential flooding near burn scars, including the Aspen Acres Fire zone in Custer and Pueblo counties.

Denver International Airport saw ground delays as storms rolled through Wednesday. On the Western Slope, monsoonal rainfall continued into Thursday morning.

Separately, all lanes of I-70 reopened Thursday between New Castle and Silt after crews spent days clearing mud and debris left by Monday’s flash flooding.
