Article Icon 1Crews Battle Multiple Fires

Five people, including four firefighters, were noncritically injured as crews worked to contain a 10-acre grass fire that prompted evacuations in Thornton on Wednesday.

No residential structures were lost, though some businesses were damaged. Part of Interstate 25 was also closed for over an hour as thick, black smoke spilled over the area, hampering visibility.

The same day, a grass fire in Logan County burned about 3,500 to 4,000 acres and triggered residential evacuations before orders were lifted after crews halted its spread. A roughly 350-acre fire within Fort Carson’s training area was still burning at 30% containment on Thursday.

With more warm, dry weather on the horizon, the state plans to launch a multiagency task force to manage what experts fear will be an exceptionally high-risk wildfire season.

Article Icon 1Greeley Voters Delay Eagles Arena Project

In a special election Tuesday, Greeley voters approved a ballot measure to repeal the zoning approval for a $1.1 billion entertainment and housing development.

The Catalyst and Cascadia projects involve the city developing and owning an entertainment district with a water park, a luxury hotel, and a new Colorado Eagles arena—along with an adjacent residential district—at the city’s western edge.

The vote follows a yearlong dispute over the development, which would be the biggest in city history. Proponents, including city leaders, view it as a vital investment in West Greeley, while opponents argue the project is too risky to be taxpayer-funded.

The ballot measure won with 54% of the vote. It will likely delay the project by at least a year, though stakeholders have filed a lawsuit arguing the ballot measure is unconstitutional.

Article Icon 1Leadville to Host 78th Skijoring Event

March 7-8, Leadville will host its 78th annual skijoring competition—a race in which skiers are towed by horses, à la water skiing, through a timed obstacle course.

Each winter, horses charge down Leadville’s historic downtown Harrison Avenue, while the skiers in tow navigate jumps, rings, and gates to compete for the best scores. Here’s a video from a past event.

Skijoring, which began as a Scandinavian, reindeer-based mode of travel, has gained popularity across Colorado. Leadville’s decades-old tradition, nicknamed the “Grand Daddy of ’em All,” is considered one of the world’s premier skijoring events.

Last year’s competition drew a crowd of 25,000 to the small mountain town. This year’s event will have expanded amenities and, as in the past, is free to the public.
