Article Icon 1Shutdown Threatens SNAP Benefits

More than 600,000 Coloradans receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits may go without them in November if the federal government shutdown continues, according to Gov. Jared Polis.

Many local governments warn of the potential impact on SNAP, which supports low-income households. Adams County Government confirmed new and ongoing cases won’t receive benefits next month.

Food banks statewide are bracing for a surge in demand, with many already struggling to keep up. Federal funding to food banks will also cease on Nov. 1 unless the shutdown ends.

Officials are directing SNAP recipients to the 211 program and Feeding Colorado, which help connect residents to state benefits, food banks, and other resources.

Article Icon 1State Degree Payoff Below Average

Just 65% of those who earn a public college degree in Colorado can expect a positive return on the investment within 10 years, a new analysis found.

To measure each state’s ROI, researchers determined the percentage of public college graduates whose earnings over a decade repay the cost of the degree with enough left over to exceed a high school graduate’s earnings.

Nationally, the report found most college degrees are still worth it, though Colorado’s payoff rate lags behind the national average of 70%. See a map here.

Colorado’s bachelor’s degrees fare slightly better, though only 49% of its associate degrees have a positive 10-year ROI, despite excelling in affordability. Read the report here.

Article Icon 1Aurora OKs Facial Recognition Tech

Aurora City Council voted 5-2 on Monday to allow the Aurora Police Department to use facial recognition technology developed by Clearwater AI.

Fewer than 10 police and sheriff’s departments in the U.S. currently use facial recognition software. Both Arvada and Arapahoe County police have approved its limited use.

Police say the tool will only be used for investigative leads, not to make positive identifications or as probable cause for arrests.

Critics worry about the technology’s flaws and potential for abuse. Earlier this year, Clearwater AI settled a class-action lawsuit over allegations it violated privacy laws.
