Article Icon 1Kirkmeyer Launches Gubernatorial Bid

State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, R-Brighton, announced Tuesday she will run to be Colorado’s next governor in 2026.

Kirkmeyer sits on the legislature’s Joint Budget Committee. She served as a Weld County commissioner for 20 years before her election to the Senate in 2020.

A vocal critic of Gov. Jared Polis, Kirkmeyer joins a growing field of Republicans in the race, including Rep. Scott Bottoms, Sen. Mark Baisley, and Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell.

With Polis term-limited in 2026, Democrats U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet and Attorney General Phil Weiser are also running for the open seat.

Article Icon 1Broncos Announce Preferred Stadium

The Denver Broncos on Tuesday named Burnham Yard, a historic Denver railyard, as the team’s preferred site for a new stadium.

The stadium will be privately funded by the team’s owners, with no new taxes, according to a joint statement issued by owners Greg and Carrie Penner, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, and Gov. Jared Polis. The city and state will support improvements to nearby infrastructure.

Burnham Yard is located about a mile southeast of Empower Field at Mile High. Rumors that the stadium would be built there have circulated since the Walton-Penner group acquired the Broncos in 2022.

The new stadium will feature a retractable roof, which could allow it to host a Super Bowl, year-round concerts, and other events. It’s expected to open in time for the 2031 NFL season.

Article Icon 1CU Physicists Create Visible Time Crystal

University of Colorado Boulder physicists have created the world’s first time crystal visible to the human eye.

Once thought to be impossible, time crystals are unique phases of matter in which atoms or other particles repeat a pattern of constant motion—forming a structure in time rather than space.

In a study published Sept. 4, CU physicists filled glass cells with liquid crystals, then shone a light on the samples, causing them to “dance” in a continuous cycle. Unlike previous time crystals, CU’s creation is visible under a microscope and, in some cases, to the naked eye.

The findings could enable new technologies, including advanced anti-counterfeiting measures and novel data storage methods.
