Article Icon 1Manitou Springs Declares Water Emergency

The City of Manitou Springs has ordered residents and businesses to stop all water use, except for “essential drinking purposes,” due to a critical water shortage.

Officials say the city’s primary water source, French Creek, is experiencing high turbidity, meaning the water can’t be efficiently treated. The backup supply from the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project is currently unavailable due to emergency pipeline repairs.

That leaves only the city’s treated water reserves, which are critically low. As a result, all non-drinking water use—including bathing, laundry, dishwashing, and irrigation—is prohibited.

Colorado Springs Utilities aims to repair the pipeline by the end of the week. Once finished, it could take 24 to 48 hours to restore access to the backup supply.

Article Icon 1Three Election Bills Signed

Gov. Jared Polis signed a trio of election-related bills into law on Monday, including a measure proponents say will “safeguard voting rights in Colorado.”

Senate Bill 001 creates a state-level version of the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, banning certain discriminatory election practices. It also expands protections for minority and LGBTQ+ voters and ensures access to multilingual ballots.

House Bill 1225 criminalizes the intimidation and coercion of voters and election officials, while House Bill 1315 reforms how legislative vacancies are filled, setting new rules for special elections and campaign finance.

Except for House Bill 1315, which won bipartisan support, the bills passed the legislature largely along party lines, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed.

Article Icon 1Morris, Movie Star Alligator, Dies

Morris, the alligator featured in films like Happy Gilmore, Dr. Doolittle 2, and Interview with the Vampire, died last week at the Colorado Gator Farm in Mosca.

Morris began his Hollywood career in 1975 and appeared in movies and television until 2006, when he retired to the reptile park north of Alamosa.

While his exact age was unknown, Morris was believed to be over 80 years old and may have been older than 100. He was the oldest alligator at the park.

On Facebook, the Colorado Gator Farm announced it plans to preserve Morris via taxidermy “so that he can continue to scare children for years to come.”
