Article Icon 1Space Command to Leave Colorado

President Trump announced Tuesday that U.S. Space Command will relocate to Alabama, reversing the Biden-era decision to keep it permanently headquartered in Colorado Springs.

Trump has long been expected to move the agency to Huntsville, Alabama, nicknamed “Rocket City,” which he initially selected as the preferred headquarters after reestablishing Space Command in his first term.

The move ends a four-year dispute between Colorado and Alabama over the location of Space Command, whose headquarters are a significant boon to the local economy.

In his announcement, Trump cited Colorado’s use of mail-in voting as a “big factor” in the decision, suggesting it encourages election fraud.

Article Icon 1DPS Violated Title IX, ED Finds

The U.S. Department of Education has found that Denver Public Schools violated Title IX protections against sex-based discrimination by creating all-gender, multi-stall bathrooms.

The finding follows a months-long investigation launched after East High School converted a girls’ restroom into an all-gender one in January, while leaving a boys’ restroom on the same floor unchanged.

The Education Department gave DPS 10 days to voluntarily convert all-gender bathrooms back to sex-designated ones and make other policy changes or face unspecified enforcement action, possibly including a loss of federal funding.

DPS pushed back on the finding, calling the investigation legally baseless, but hasn’t said whether it will comply with the directive.

Article Icon 1Polis Cuts $250M to Balance Budget

Gov. Jared Polis last week ordered a total of $252.5 million in cuts and redirected spending to balance the current fiscal year’s budget.

The cuts follow a special session in which lawmakers, having partly addressed a $783 million shortfall, ceded responsibility for budget cuts to Polis.

The largest cut targets Medicaid providers, with Polis forgoing a planned 1.6% reimbursement rate hike to save about $38 million. Other cuts affected higher education and various grant programs.

Republicans, including Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, a member of the Joint Budget Committee, criticized the plan and questioned why Polis didn’t first cut Medicaid for illegal immigrants.
