Article Icon 1CPW to Euthanize Second Wolf

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is trying to kill a wolf or wolves from the Copper Creek Pack, according to a letter sent to the Holy Cross Cattlemen’s Association (HCCA).

The letter, signed July 25, states CPW staff in Pitkin County are “undertaking additional lethal control efforts” after the pack killed a calf on July 18. Multiple attempts to get near the wolves since July 20 have been unsuccessful.

CPW sent the letter in response to HCCA’s request to lethally remove one or more members of the pack, which the agency denied.

CPW killed one member of the pack in May in an effort to curb chronic depredation. Since then, ranchers have reported continued conflict and additional suspected livestock attacks.

A mountain lion attacked and killed a small dog in a north Boulder neighborhood Friday night, police confirmed over the weekend.

The attack happened around 9:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Balsam Avenue. Police say a resident was walking their dog when the mountain lion appeared suddenly and pounced on the pet, killing it instantly and leaving with its body.

The mountain lion was spotted again the next day in the same area. Wildlife officers monitored its activity for about two hours before it disappeared. The dog’s remains were later recovered from a nearby backyard. Watch video here.

While attacks like this are extremely rare, authorities provided a list of tips to stay safe in the event of a mountain lion encounter.

Article Icon 1Butterfly Pavilion First in Firefly Milestone

The Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster completed the lifecycle of a Colorado firefly species under human care, a historic first that could help restore the state’s firefly populations.

In a press release, the Pavilion said a female Colorado firefly (genus Photuris) born and raised in its lab laid viable eggs, one of which hatched this month, closing the lifecycle and proving the species can be bred in captivity.

Raising fireflies is one of the most complex challenges in the field of invertebrate research, achieved by just a few institutions globally. The Pavilion’s effort took eight years.

The breakthrough will help scientists raise multiple generations in captivity, with the ultimate goal of reintroducing fireflies to Colorado, the American West, and other habitats.
