Article Icon 1Opening Statements in Dentist Murder Trial

Opening statements were delivered yesterday in the murder trial of James Craig, an Aurora dentist accused of fatally poisoning his wife in 2023.

Prosecutors said Craig poisoned his wife, Angela, over several days, mixing lethal substances he ordered online into her protein shakes. They suggested his affair and financial woes were possible motives.

While the defense didn’t dispute that Angela was poisoned, they argued Craig’s alleged role in her death hinges on assumption and speculation, asking jurors to presume his innocence during the trial.

The trial is scheduled to last three weeks. Some of their six children are expected to testify against him.

The Deer Creek Fire in Utah crossed the state line into Montrose County on Monday evening. As of Tuesday morning, it had grown to nearly 13,000 acres and was 7% contained.

Officials have set an estimated containment date of Aug. 10 for the South Rim Fire, which is now almost 4,000 acres and 0% contained. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park remains closed, with several evacuations in place for Montrose County.

Multiple sightings of rare, wind-fueled fire whirls, or “firenadoes,” were caught on film in Douglas County and near the Utah-Colorado border.

A fast-moving landspout touched down near the intersection of Highways 83 and 86 in Franktown on Monday, damaging the roofs of several businesses, according to Franktown Fire.

The landspout, a short-lived type of tornado, struck around 2:30 p.m. and lasted about 90 seconds, sending debris flying, including a roof that landed on a pet boarding facility. See a video here.

Officials said seven businesses across three buildings, along with several vehicles, were damaged. No injuries were reported.

Most tornadoes in Colorado are classified as landspouts, which form from the ground up and are typically short-lived and weaker than supercell tornadoes.
