Article Icon 1Senator Resigns Amid Ethics Investigation

State Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis, a Longmont Democrat, resigned this week amid an ongoing ethics investigation into her alleged mistreatment of legislative aides.

In December, former staffers lodged an ethics complaint against Jaquez Lewis, who had previously been accused of withholding wages, setting unreasonable schedules, and using aides for personal chores.

In response to the complaint, Jaquez Lewis submitted letters of support, purportedly from past staffers, for the ethics committee to review. One letter turned out to be fabricated, casting doubt on the others’ authorship.

The Senator announced her resignation Tuesday morning, just hours before the committee had planned to reconvene. The ethics probe was not mentioned in her announcement.

Article Icon 1King Soopers Strike Ends

Both King Soopers and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 (UFCW Local 7), the workers union that instigated a 10,000-employee strike at King Soopers stores earlier this month, separately announced an end to the labor stoppage Monday.

A statement released by the union confirmed that a return-to-work settlement was reached, allowing an end to the strike and a return to the bargaining table, among other terms.

The agreement comes just days after the grocer’s restraining order against striking workers was partly granted, limiting the actions of picketers outside stores.

The strike, which began on Feb. 6, was originally planned to last two weeks. UFCW Local 7 says the strike “was just the beginning” of its campaign for better staffing.

King Soopers said the union has committed to removing all picket lines and resuming normal business hours as of Feb. 19.

Article Icon 1Arctic Blast Brings Dangerous Cold, Snow

Another Arctic blast is sweeping across the Eastern Plains, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and chances of snow.

Cold Weather Advisories are in effect through tomorrow morning, with single-digit highs and below-zero lows. Denver is forecast to hit -3 degrees—just one degree above the record low—while wind chill could drop to 30 below zero.

Light snow is possible on the plains tonight and tomorrow. Heavier mountain snow is expected to resume today, leaving travel conditions hazardous and possibly causing closures at higher elevations.

The Denver area is expected to warm up starting Friday, clearing the way for a mostly sunny weekend with highs in the 50s and 60s.
