California County Eyes Peters for Role

Shasta County, California, is considering bringing former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters into its elections office just months after her release from a Colorado prison.

Shasta County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis said Peters could come on as a contract employee, filling in for an assistant registrar who is on medical leave.

Curtis said on a radio show that Peters would take the assistant role after Sept. 4, and Sen. Alex Padilla is already calling for her removal.

Peters was convicted in August 2024 on seven counts tied to a 2021 election equipment breach and served less than two years of a nine-year sentence after Gov. Jared Polis commuted it.

Mesa County Crash Ruled Intentional

The Colorado State Patrol said Monday that a wrong-way crash on Interstate 70 in Mesa County last month that killed one person and seriously injured six others was intentional.

The Mesa County Coroner ruled the manner of death of the 32-year-old Colorado Springs woman driving the wrong way an intentional act. Her blood alcohol content was 0.235.

Troopers had responded to a report of a gray sedan speeding the wrong way near Loma about 11:36 a.m. on July 20, and the head-on crash followed five minutes later.

The driver of the Ford F-150, a 40-year-old Thornton man, and five passengers, including a 13-year-old and a 10-year-old, were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.

CU Students Get Sundance Discounts

The Sundance Film Festival will give University of Colorado (CU) Boulder students discounted tickets, free on-campus screenings, and student-only talks with filmmakers.

CU Boulder is now an official university partner for the festival, which moves from Park City, Utah, to Boulder for its Jan. 21-31, 2027 edition.

At least 100 students will get volunteer roles, about 30 will serve on a student advisory board, and the institute hopes to credential 10 student journalists.

Sundance representatives will take part in at least 40 events on campus over the coming academic year, including classroom visits, capstone projects, and research events.
