Article Icon 1Landowners, Recreators Clash Over River Use

River advocates are preparing a new legislative proposal that would give more leeway to boaters floating through private property, aiming to end a decades-long, legally murky waterway access debate.

Proponents, such as paddlers and outfitters, say public river use on private land is supported by the state constitution. Landowners contend that permitting such access amounts to an unconstitutional taking, promising costly litigation.

Last week, a stream access advocacy coalition split into two camps, divided over the bill’s specifics. Some want broader wade-in access for anglers; others are banking on a narrower, less contentious float-in law.

If legislation is picked up next session, it would be at least the third attempt to settle the dispute—not including a 2018 lawsuit that reached the Colorado Supreme Court and was dismissed in 2023.

A seven-vehicle collision on Interstate 225 in Aurora last Friday sent nine people to the hospital, prompting a police investigation.

According to police, a 17-year-old boy who was allegedly speeding caused the crash when he failed to slow down for traffic near a separate, earlier crash.

Both the teen driver and his passenger were injured. Following his release from the hospital, police arrested the teen on an outstanding felony warrant and cited him for the crash.

At least one person in the collision sustained serious injuries. I-225 remained closed for several hours due to the crash and subsequent investigation.

Article Icon 1Brief Cold Front Starts Week

A fast-moving storm swept into the state Monday and is expected to linger today, dropping highs to the 40s and bringing light snow to the northern mountains.

Winds will remain gusty today, adding wind chill to the already cold air. Rain and snow mostly tapered off yesterday, leaving a few inches in the high country above 10,000 feet.

The Denver metro’s first hard freeze is expected this morning or tomorrow morning, with overnight lows ranging from the 30s to the mid-20s. Forecasters are also warning of freeze conditions on the Western Slope, where temperatures are expected to dip well below freezing.

Milder weather will return tomorrow, warming up much of the state in time for Halloween. Highs will climb to the low 60s by Friday and back into the 70s this weekend.
