Article Icon 1Denver Zoo Paused by Threats

The Denver Zoo briefly paused operations late Sunday afternoon after receiving a threatening phone call.

Police swept the campus and determined the threat to be unfounded, allowing the zoo to reopen for its Glowing Wild event Sunday evening. Regular hours resumed Monday.

Since Friday, at least five other U.S. zoos—in Ohio, Kentucky, and Arizona—have received similar hoax calls involving bomb threats or active shooter claims, prompting evacuations and emergency responses.

None of the threats were found to be credible. The FBI considers swatting incidents like these to be a growing national problem.

Article Icon 1Gas Prices Continue to Climb

Gas prices continue to rise in Colorado, where the statewide average hit $4.44 per gallon Monday—two cents below the national average and 44 cents below the highest recorded average price.

In Denver, the highest prices neared $5 per gallon after rising 55.1 cents in the past week, though a few metro stations posted prices as low as $3.84.

By region, the Eastern Plains has some of the lowest average prices, while some mountain areas tend to be hardest hit. AAA data shows Pitkin County at $5.656 per gallon, among the highest in the state. Here’s a current map.

Nationally, California reported the costliest statewide average—topping $6 per gallon—while Georgia had the lowest, at about $3.84. See a list here.

Article Icon 1May Storm to Bring Snow

A significant spring storm arriving today is expected to bring 3 to 9 inches of snow to the urban corridor and nearly two feet to the high country.

Rain and snow will start today, though the bulk will fall overnight into tomorrow. By tomorrow evening, Estes Park could see up to about 2 feet, the highest of many foot-plus mountain totals. Denver could get around 4 to 6 inches. See a map here.

Much of the state is under a winter storm watch or warning. Tomorrow morning’s Interstate 25 commute could be slick, while mountain travel could be difficult to dangerous north of Interstate 70.

The snow could put a meaningful dent in Colorado’s drought. Warmer, drier weather will return later in the week ahead of isolated storm chances this weekend.
