Jeffco Denies DOE Claims

Jefferson Public Schools last week responded to the U.S. Department of Education’s (DOE) claims that they’ve reached an impasse over an ongoing Title IX investigation.

The DOE’s impasse letter, issued early this month, claims the district violated Title IX by allowing males to compete on female sports teams. The letter warns of impending enforcement that could lead to a loss of federal funds.

In response, Jeffco said the allegations made by the DOE’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) “appear to be based on a significant misunderstanding,” claiming the 60-plus male students the OCR cites are “male managers, trainers, or mascots,” not athletes.

The district says it remains “ready and willing to continue working with the OCR toward a resolution.”

Gun Rights Group Sues Over Law

The Colorado State Shooting Association (CSSA) has filed a federal lawsuit challenging a new state law that expands government access to firearm purchase records.

The new law, passed during the 2026 legislative session, includes provisions about dealer training, gun store security plans, and reporting requirements. It also expands the record-keeping requirements for dealers.

CSSA argues the law lets officials to obtain transaction records without a warrant, probable cause, or a stated reason. According to the lawsuit, this violates constitutional protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.

The organization also sued last year to challenge a new permit-to-purchase program. That lawsuit is ongoing.

CSP Tracking Road Rage Increase

Reports of aggressive driving in the state have increased each year in the last three years, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

More than 30,000 reports of road rage were called into the state’s aggressive driving line in 2025, with annual increases topping 50% each year since 2023, a CSP trooper said.

Skyler McKinley, AAA’s Regional Director of Public Affairs, said Colorado consistently ranks as one of the top states for road rage, in which hot weather and high gas prices play a role during the summer.

A report released last month found Colorado ranks No. 4 in the nation for road rage incidents.
