Article Icon 1Denver Homicides Drop in 2025

Denver reported 37 total homicides in 2025, a 48% drop from 2024 and one of the city’s lowest tallies since 1990, according to newly released year-end data.

The Denver Police Department (DPD) credited the decline to several factors, including faster police response, long-term prevention, focused patrols in high-crime areas, and the use of technology.

Automated license plate readers, a subject of national controversy, proved instrumental in solving homicides and other violent crimes, DPD said.

According to Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas, the city will now shift its focus toward boosting road safety, aiming to curb a recent surge in fatal traffic incidents.

Colorado will commemorate 150 years of statehood on Aug. 1, less than a month after the U.S. celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

A state commission has approved 12 initiatives in honor of Colorado’s sesquicentennial, including a documentary film series, a digital passport program, and an oral history of at least 150 Coloradans.

The U.S. Postal Service will recognize the anniversary with a special Forever stamp featuring a landscape by Colorado photographer John Fielder. The stamp’s free first-day-of-issue event is Jan. 24 at the History Colorado Center.

A museum exhibit chronicling Colorado’s long road to statehood—spanning more than 15 years—is on display at the History Colorado Center in Denver now through Sept. 6.

Here’s a list of sesquicentennial events across the state, from exhibitions and lectures to rodeos and drone shows.

Much-needed snow fell in the central and northern mountains last night into this morning, with up to 10 inches expected to accumulate in some areas.

The Front Range, meanwhile, will stay dry and warm today. Dry conditions Sunday fueled three fires in Colorado Springs, and fire warnings remained in effect Monday for the southeast plains.

On the Western Slope, early Sunday morning fog hampered visibility, prompting travel warnings along Interstate 70, while Monday’s storm brought rain showers to parts of the Grand Valley.

The next chance for precipitation is this Thursday, when a second storm will drop highs to the low 40s and possibly bring snow to lower elevations.
