Article Icon 1Court to Hear Catholic Preschool Case

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a case involving Catholic preschools that claim Colorado violated their religious rights by excluding them from a state-funded program unless they comply with nondiscrimination rules.

The Archdiocese of Denver, which runs 34 preschools, says it’s excluded from the state’s free preschool program because it doesn’t follow the program’s nondiscrimination rules, which prohibit denying admission based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Trump administration filed a brief in support of the archdiocese, whose attorneys argue the schools should be exempt from the provision.

The case tests a landmark 1990 precedent and could redefine how states balance nondiscrimination laws with religious freedom. A decision is expected in 2027.

Article Icon 1Feds Propose Lake Powell Cuts

The Bureau of Reclamation said Friday it will likely reduce Lake Powell’s water releases to 6 million acre-feet, the lowest amount in decades, in response to widespread drought in the Colorado River Basin.

Lake Powell, located on the Utah-Arizona line, is one of the river’s two main reservoirs. The bureau also plans to release additional water from Flaming Gorge Reservoir, upstream in Wyoming and Utah, to boost Powell’s levels.

The action is necessary given the “severity of the risks” facing the seven-state river system, which supplies water to 40 million people, the bureau said. Those risks are closely linked to historically low snowpack across the basin this winter.

A final decision is expected next week. The plans could open the door to lawsuits calling for Upper Basin states, including Colorado, to make forced water cuts.

Article Icon 1Shutoff Possible Amid Fire Weather

Xcel Energy is preparing for a possible Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on Wednesday in response to severe fire weather on the Western Slope.

The PSPS could impact customers in Garfield, Mesa, and Pitkin counties starting around 9 a.m., with outages in Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties from around 11 a.m., the utility said Monday.

High wildfire risk is also forecast Thursday along the northern Front Range, where conditions could prompt additional precautions. Enhanced safety settings, which can result in wind-triggered outages, will be activated across the state.

Parts of the Eastern Plains could approach 90 degrees by Wednesday. A series of storms is forecast to move in Thursday, bringing cooler temperatures and rain chances.
