Answer: Before it was a fort, Fort Collins was Camp Collins, a temporary military camp set up in 1864 to protect Overland Trail travelers. When the Poudre River flooded in June 1864 and destroyed most of the camp, it was rebuilt downstream as a permanent post, which became Fort Collins.
