Question: Where did the name “pickleball” originate from?
Answer: There are two stories circulating about how pickleball got its name.
One story theorizes that the name comes from co-founder Joel Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who would chase and run after the ball, as they played.
The other story says that Joan Pritchard, Joel Pritchard’s wife, explained the name comes from the pickle boat in crew. The pickle boat is made up of leftover oarsmen from other boats. Joan said the name reminded her of the combination of different sports used to create pickleball.
