Question: How did the town of Nederland get its name?

Answer: In 1873, the Caribou Mine northwest of the town was sold to the Dutch-owned Mining Company Nederland. Though it was then known as Middle Boulder, the miners referred to the town as Nederland, meaning “lowlands” in Dutch, because it sat at a lower elevation than the 10,000-foot-high mine.
