Answer: Pack burro racing was named Colorado’s state summer heritage sport in 2012. The sport, in which competitors race on foot alongside donkeys, dates to a story of 19th century prospectors who found gold in the Rocky Mountains and raced each other back into town to stake a claim. Neither miner could ride its burro because of the animal’s load, so they ran beside them instead.
