What Colorado hotel served as the inspiration for Stephen King’s novel The Shining?
Stephen King’s The Shining (1977) was inspired by his brief stay at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. On a trip in 1974, the novelist and his wife spent one night at The Stanley, where they were the only guests. Legend has it that the hotel’s eerie atmosphere, as well as a nightmare King had during his stay, became the inspiration for the now-famous novel.
