Question: What is Colorado’s state reptile?

Answer: The Western Painted Turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, was designated Colorado’s official state reptile in 2008, thanks in large part to a group of fourth graders who nominated the species when they realized Colorado lacked a state reptile. Known for its bright red and yellow markings on its shell and limbs, the turtle is a common sight at Colorado’s ponds and lakes.
