Good Morning! On this day in 1969, scientists detonated a 43-kiloton nuclear bomb 8,400 feet underground in Rulison, a rural site on the Western Slope. The experiment, dubbed Project Rulison, was one of several unsuccessful attempts to release usable natural gas via nuclear explosives.

Colorado Pilot in Deadly Amazon Jet Crash

One of the two pilots injured when an Amazon cargo jet overran a Miami runway and plowed into two vehicles, killing five people, has been identified as Joseph Carroll, 55, of Lafayette.

Both Carroll and first officer Jaime Felipe Silva Molina, 37, were treated and released after the crash, which happened at about 2 p.m. Sunday. The Boeing 767 overshot the runway by at least 1,300 feet.

A witness who lent one pilot his phone said the man was shaking and told his wife his career was over. All five killed were inside two struck vehicles.

Operator 21 Air has faced a string of safety complaints from former pilots who say they were fired for raising concerns. The NTSB investigation continues.

Judge Raises Morphew’s Bond to $10M

An Alamosa County judge raised Barry Morphew’s bond from $3 million to $10 million cash only on Tuesday, citing his capacity to commit new offenses while out.

A jury indicted Morphew last June for the 2020 death of his wife, Suzanne. He’d been out on a $3 million surety bond but was arrested last week for an alleged hit-and-run in Denver.

Prosecutors said GPS data showed Morphew left home under a work exception on Aug. 26 and instead drove to Denver International Airport to pick up his daughter.

Judge Amanda Hopkins said Morphew has shown he has no respect for court orders, and a prosecutor argued he could flee the country. He’s set to go to trial in July 2027.

CPW Kills 2 Wolves

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) lethally removed two wolves on Monday in separate operations, one in Pitkin County and one in Rio Blanco County.

Both were uncollared male yearlings. CPW linked one wolf’s pack to four cattle attacks and the other’s to four sheep attacks killing 13 lambs and two ewes.

Both packs met the state’s chronic depredation standard. CPW said producers had already deployed non-lethal deterrents including range riders, cameras, and hazing.

The two killings bring the number of wolves that have died since reintroduction began to 19.
