Article Icon 1Englewood Officer Arrested for Assault

A former Englewood police officer is facing second-degree assault and other charges for allegedly tasing and putting a man in a chokehold during an Oct. 8 traffic stop.

According to an arrest affidavit, Ryan Vasina pulled over Carlos Jose Rangel-Rincones, a Venezuelan national, for allegedly running a stop sign. The driver spoke little English, leading to some confusion.

Prosecutors say Vasina, frustrated by the language barrier, used excessive force on the driver despite his compliance, then arrested him on charges that were later dismissed.

Vasina, who has since been fired, turned himself in to Denver police on Monday. If convicted of felony assault, he faces a two- to eight-year sentence.

A massive, freshly cut Christmas tree has arrived at the Outlets at Castle Rock, setting the stage for the shopping mall’s annual Christmas tree lighting.

A flatbed truck hauled the 55-foot white fir all the way from Mount Shasta in Northern California, delivering it yesterday morning. See a video here.

The Outlets says it takes over a week to trim the tree, which is then decorated with more than 8,000 lights and 5,000 ornaments. Here’s what it’s looked like in the past.

The mall’s tree lighting event takes place Saturday, Nov. 15, with live music, a Santa Claus appearance, and fireworks. The tree will stay up the rest of the year.
