Readers Share Thanksgiving Memories
Recently, we asked you, our readers, to share your Thanksgiving memories. We received many responses, from nostalgic Turkey Day fun to touching family moments. Here are some of our favorites.
Chris from Loveland recalls driving all the way from Fort Collins to Sabetha, Kansas, to visit his mom’s family. “What made this trip memorable was the day after Thanksgiving, when we went to the town’s official Christmas kick-off festivities. There’s nothing like a small-town celebration, very Hallmark movie-like.”
Audrey, south of Cañon City, said: “We grew our own turkey in our backyard.”
Julia in Fort Collins remembers after-dinner family football matches: “All six of us would duct tape pillows to our knees for padding, swipe Mom’s black mascara under our eyes for ‘toughness,’ and head out for a funny game of football—lots of laughing, tumbling, and a few touchdown celebrations.”
Finally, Tim, who grew up in Pueblo, shared a war story, both heartbreaking and extraordinary, which his late father told every Thanksgiving. Having swapped duties with a friend, his father was wounded—but his friend, whose place he’d nearly taken, was killed.
“I used to get tired of hearing that story every Thanksgiving—but after my dad died suddenly in 1990, I’d like to hear it again.”
We’d like to extend our deepest thanks to everyone who wrote in—we sincerely enjoyed reading your messages.
