Article Icon 1Council Member Accused in Shooting Recalled

Brent John Metz, a Mountain View town councilman accused of shooting a teenager in the face in September 2024, was removed from his position in a special election on Tuesday.

Metz has pleaded not guilty to charges including second-degree assault, felony menacing, and illegal discharge of a firearm. His attorneys claim the shooting was accidental, caused by a misfire as he retrieved his gun from his truck.

The 17-year-old and another teen said they were looking for a place to take homecoming photos when they hopped the property’s fence, planning to ask permission from the homeowner.

Metz was recalled in a vote of 127-72. He’ll be succeeded by council candidate Ryan Debner.

Article Icon 1Man Hit by Foul Ball Sues Rockies

A man hit by a foul ball during a game at Coors Field is suing the Colorado Rockies for negligence.

Timothy Roeckel says he was in a private box suite during the July 16, 2023, game against the Yankees when a foul ball hit him in the eye, causing “catastrophic and permanent injuries.

While stadiums are typically shielded from liability under Colorado law, Roeckel’s attorneys argue his case is an exception because the team failed to address longstanding safety issues.

The lawsuit also argues the Rockies’ poor performance has led fans to focus on socializing, dining, or networking rather than the game, making them more susceptible to injury.

Denver’s 16th Street Mall has officially rebranded as 16th Street, Mayor Mike Johnston announced on Tuesday.

The name change is a near-final touch on the years-long, $175.4 million revamp of the pavilion, which has been troubled by crime and high vacancy rates.

Johnston said the word “mall” felt outdated and confusing, as the street is more than a single retail location. As part of the $100,000 rebranding campaign, “The Denver Way” will serve as the area’s new slogan.

The grand reopening for most of 16th Street will be held May 31 and June 1. Construction will fully wrap up later this fall.
