Polis Signs, Vetoes Session Bills

Gov. Jared Polis kicked off his end-of-session bill review this week, signing measures including a rideshare safety bill and protections for students with disabilities while rejecting several others.

On Tuesday, Polis vetoed bills that would have banned surveillance pricing and reformed state arbitration law. Polis vetoed four bills last week, including one that would have required social media companies to work more closely with law enforcement on content violations.

Also Tuesday, Polis signed what lawmakers describe as the strictest rideshare safety law in the nation, imposing new regulations on companies like Uber and Lyft. Polis vetoed a more robust version of the bill last year.

Polis has until June 12 to sign or veto remaining bills from the 2026 legislative session.

GOP Governor Hopefuls Clash in Debate

Colorado’s three Republican gubernatorial candidates met for their first full debate Tuesday, 28 days before the June 30 primary.

State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer of Weld County, state Rep. Scott Bottoms of Colorado Springs, and ministry leader Victor Marx squared off on affordability, immigration, and election integrity.

Kirkmeyer, a party fixture who serves on the Joint Budget Committee, told Marx: “You’re unfit. You’re unqualified.” Both Kirkmeyer and Bottoms said they wouldn’t support Marx if he wins the nomination.

Gov. Polis is term-limited and cannot seek re-election. Colorado’s last Republican governor was Bill Owens, who served from 1999 to 2007.

Task Force Urges Drought Emergency

Colorado’s Drought Task Force formally called on Gov. Jared Polis to declare an emergency drought proclamation that would advance the state to Phase Three—the highest drought response level—and unlock additional state resources.

The recommendation comes in the wake of a historically dry winter that spurred municipal drought restrictions across the state.

Drought conditions have improved in some regions, such as northern Colorado and parts of the Eastern Plains, over the last month. Others, like the San Luis Valley, reported more severe drought after a dry May.
