Article Icon 1Lawmakers Wrap up Special Session

A six-day special legislative session came to an end Tuesday after the Colorado House of Representatives passed measures to close a $783 million budget gap.

To balance the budget, Democrats voted to eliminate corporate tax breaks, tap into state reserves, and left the task of cutting up to $300 million to Gov. Jared Polis, who will decide where to trim.

In the session’s final hours, the House voted to condemn former Rep. Ryan Armagost, whom Democrats had planned to censure until he resigned last week.

Armagost had shared a photo of Rep. Yara Zokaie in a private GOP group chat, leading to harassment and threats. The resolution to condemn Armagost passed 59-2.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife ended its search for an uncollared wolf attacking livestock in Rio Blanco County following an unsuccessful attempt to kill the animal.

CPW authorized the lethal removal of the wolf, which it linked to three livestock attacks, on Aug. 4, but wildfires in the area delayed the operation by nearly two weeks.

Wildlife officials located and fired at the wolf on Aug. 16. The agents were unable to find it afterward, leaving the outcome of the effort uncertain.

A separate effort to euthanize a wolf in Pitkin County is still underway.

Winter Wonderlights, a popular Christmas light show in Loveland, has been canceled for the 2025 holiday season, city organizer Visit Loveland announced last week.

The festival had been held for eight years. In addition to more than 200,000 Christmas lights, it featured themed activities, live reindeer, ice carving, and a holiday market.

Following the announcement, members of the Loveland community spoke out, voicing support for the event and dismay at its cancellation.

In an update on social media, Visit Loveland said community partners have expressed interest in preserving the tradition, potentially allowing it to continue, though “discussions are still in the early stages.”
