The Trump administration has released $40 million to permanently secure one of the Colorado River’s oldest and most powerful water rights.

The money funds the Shoshone Permanency Project, enabling the Colorado River District to purchase senior water rights tied to Xcel Energy’s Shoshone hydroelectric plant near Glenwood Springs. That water right dates to 1902, making it one of the oldest on the entire Colorado River.

The Shoshone right legally compels minimum flows through Glenwood Canyon, keeping water moving downstream for communities, farms, and ecosystems that rely on it. Locking it in permanently means that protection doesn’t disappear if the plant ever changes hands.

The 29,000-acre Sharpe Fire in southeastern Colorado has been declared 100% contained, bringing relief to Baca County communities just in time for Memorial Day.

The blaze tore through drought-parched Eastern Plains grasslands last week, fed by a flash drought that has left Colorado running a severe moisture deficit. The state would need 190% of normal precipitation by fall to fully recover, according to water officials.

The Memorial Day containment is welcome news, but fire officials warn the season is far from over. Record-low snowpack has set the stage for a dangerous summer, and conditions that fueled the Sharpe Fire remain across the Eastern Plains.

The Colorado Avalanche’s season is on the brink as they face the Golden Knights tonight in Las Vegas.

Colorado dropped Game 2 to the Vegas Golden Knights 3-1 at Ball Arena Friday night, going down 0-2 in the Western Conference Finals as star defender Cale Makar remains sidelined with an upper-body injury.

Teams that fall into an 0-2 hole in the NHL playoffs rarely come back to win the series. Game 3 is tonight at T-Mobile Arena in a true must-win if the Avs want to keep their season alive.
