Lawmakers React to Trump’s Election Address

Colorado’s congressional delegation and state lawmakers divided along party lines after President Trump’s Thursday night address on election security.

In the address, Trump alleged foreign interference and targeted mail-in voting, releasing documents he said showed China interfered in the 2020 election, which he lost to former President Joe Biden. The issue lands hard in Colorado, which votes almost entirely by mail.

Democrats rejected the claims as Sen. John Hickenlooper cited the tampering conviction of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, calling Colorado’s mail voting trusted across parties. Secretary of State Jena Griswold added that the 2020 election was “free and fair.”

Republicans pressed for tighter safeguards, with state Rep. Matt Soper, who represents Mesa and Delta counties, saying the state “should always be monitoring” the election process.

Aspen Acres Containment Climbs to 61%

Crews battling the Aspen Acres Fire in Pueblo and Custer counties reached 61% containment by Saturday, with no new growth reported overnight.

The fire has burned about 100,224 acres since sparking June 29, ranking as the seventh-largest wildfire by acreage in Colorado history. Cooler, wetter weather and calmer winds have let crews strengthen lines along the Highway 165 corridor.

As conditions eased, officials downgraded several evacuation zones to pre-evacuation status and cleared more residents to return home, including in the Libre area of Huerfano County. Orders and warnings remained in place across parts of Custer, Pueblo, Fremont, and Huerfano counties.

Strategic Operations Chief Manny Mendoza said crews were working to “squeeze the box” and pen in the flames.

Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Wraps

The 85th Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo wrapped up its five-day run Saturday night in Colorado Springs, closing the PRCA’s NFR Open with a winner-take-all championship round.

Held at the Norris Penrose Event Center, the NFR Open drew more than 200 of the top cowboys and cowgirls from 12 U.S. circuits, Canada, and Mexico competing for over $1 million in payouts. Saturday’s finals crowned the event’s national circuit champions.

A Colorado Springs tradition since 1937, the rodeo has long saluted the region’s heavy military presence. This year’s performances included a First Responders night, a U.S. Air Force Academy matinee, and a NORAD and U.S. Northern Command night.

Beyond the competition, the grounds drew families for the fan-favorite mutton bustin’, where young kids hang on to running sheep, plus a petting zoo and the Fan Zone.
