Over 7,000 Attend Kirk Vigil

A vigil for late conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk drew nearly 7,500 people to Colorado State University’s Canvas Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 18, the day Kirk was originally scheduled to visit campus.

A panel of conservative and Christian figures, most with Colorado ties, spoke at the event, urging the crowd to continue advocating for civic engagement. Some attendees placed flowers, candles, and other tributes around photos of Kirk.

Following the vigil, the political group National Ground Game held an on-campus debate, originally planned as a counter-event to Kirk’s appearance. Organizers described it as a forum to condemn political violence and defend free speech.

Heavy security accompanied both events. Canvas Stadium implemented gameday screenings, while K-9 units, mounted patrols, and rooftop spotters were visible across campus.

Missing Hunters Found Dead

Authorities are investigating the deaths of Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko, two 25-year-old elk hunters who went missing in Conejos County on Sept. 11.

The men’s disappearance, which coincided with heavy storms in the area, prompted a massive search effort. Crews found their bodies about two miles from the Rio De Los Pinos Trailhead on Sept. 18.

Investigators found no obvious injuries or initial signs of foul play and have not yet determined the manner or cause of death. Autopsies are expected to be completed today.

Veterans Take Dream Flights

Colorado seniors took to the skies last week thanks to Dream Flights, a nonprofit that gives veterans the chance to fly in World War II-era open-cockpit biplanes.

Since 2011, the group has flown nearly 8,000 seniors nationwide, mostly veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. It describes its mission as bringing “joy, gratitude, and a sense of adventure” to those who served.

Robert Fleak, 96, a retired helicopter pilot and Cold War-era Army veteran, was one of 10 residents of The Ridge Senior Living in Lakewood who took flight Saturday, soaring for 15 minutes in the same Stearman biplane once used to train World War II aviators.

The group also hosted flights for senior and assisted living communities in Castle Rock and Colorado Springs. See a video here.
