Multiple Fires Trigger Evacuations

Authorities issued evacuation and pre-evacuation orders Friday afternoon for the 24 Fire near Fort Carson, which grew to 4,600 acres at 0% containment by Sunday afternoon.

Farther south, in Costilla County, the fast-moving Chama Canyon Fire prompted evacuations in the area. By Saturday morning, it had burned 140 acres but was 50% contained.

Other fires, including in Commerce City and Lone Tree, cropped up Saturday but were quickly brought under control.

Experts say the low snowpack and record heat, combined with dry, windy weather, could bring an early start to Colorado’s wildfire season.

Trump Re-Endorses Rep. Hurd

President Trump is again backing Rep. Jeff Hurd, R-Grand Junction, for reelection, he announced Friday, less than a month after withdrawing his endorsement over the congressman’s opposition to tariffs on Canada.

On Truth Social, Trump said that Hope Scheppelman, Hurd’s challenger in the 3rd Congressional District (CD), is leaving the campaign trail to join his administration. Trump added that he’ll be “fully supporting Jeff’s Re-Election,” reversing a Feb. 21 decision to back Scheppelman over Hurd.

House GOP leaders had reportedly been urging the White House to change course due to the competitive nature of the 3rd CD, which covers most of the Western Slope.

Hurd, in response, said he’s “grateful” for Trump’s support and “efforts to unify Republicans” in the district. Primary elections take place June 30.

Ski Resorts Close Early

Ski resorts across parts of the West, including in Colorado, have begun to announce season closing dates as an unusually warm, dry winter comes to an end. See a list here.

Frisco Nordic Center ended its season on March 17, weeks earlier than last year. Ski Cooper, a small, community-run hill, shut down Sunday after operating about 100 days.

Steamboat Resort’s final day will be April 12, about a week earlier than in 2025. End-of-season celebrations that weekend include the Cardboard Classic, a homemade sled race, and the resort’s popular pond skim.

Meanwhile, the summer recreation industry is getting a head start. Rocky Mountain Paddleboard opened Saturday, kicking off its earliest season in nearly 15 years.
