Article Icon 1Mayor Resigns Amid Buc-ee’s Controversy

Palmer Lake Mayor Glant Havenar resigned last Wednesday, days after a lawsuit alleged she referred to opponents of a controversial Buc-ee’s development “terrorists” and “losers” in leaked text messages.

The lawsuit, filed by the group Integrity Matters, alleges Havenar also violated Colorado open meetings laws and used fake social media accounts to influence public opinion.

In an interview, Havenar said she resigned after being “harassed for 10 months” over the development and wanted to spare Palmer Lake the added turmoil of a recall election.

The Palmer Lake Board of Trustees will begin the process to appoint a new mayor on June 12. Three trustees already face recall petitions tied to their support for the annexation needed for the Buc-ee’s project.

Article Icon 1Lawsuit: Polis Ordered ICE Cooperation

Gov. Polis ordered state employees to turn over personal information to ICE in response to a civil subpoena, according to a whistleblower lawsuit filed last week.

Scott Moss, a director in the state labor department, alleges Polis ordered him and other officials to provide ICE with identifying information for “sponsors of unaccompanied minors”—people who house children of detained immigrants—despite state laws barring such cooperation without a court order.

The lawsuit claims Moss was “directed to commit illegal acts,” citing laws signed by Polis that prohibit state employees from sharing such information with federal immigration authorities in civil cases.

Defending the decision, Polis’ office said the subpoena falls under carveouts for criminal investigations—in this case, into possible child exploitation—and stressed Colorado is “not a sanctuary state.”

Article Icon 1Boulder Expands Grazing Mitigation

The City of Boulder is launching a pilot program that uses cattle grazing to reduce wildfire risk.

Starting in mid-June, local ranchers will provide around 70 cattle to graze 35 acres of grassland near Wonderland Lake. The cattle keep grass height low, slowing wildfire spread and making fires easier to control.

A similar project on Shanahan Ridge has been underway for over a decade, using cow-calf pairs to manage tall oatgrass, an invasive fire-prone species. Louisville also implemented grazing mitigation after the 2021 Marshall Fire.

Officials say the programs not only reduce fire risk but also support soil health, native vegetation, and broader environmental benefits.
