Article Icon 1‘No Kings’ Protests Held Across State

Thousands gathered at more than 40 locations across Colorado for the “No Kings” protests on Saturday, joining more than 2,000 demonstrations nationwide opposing the Trump administration.

Protests stretched from the Denver metro area to the Western Slope. Many stalled traffic, prompting road closures and delays in public transit as marchers filled streets and parks.

Hours after Denver’s official rallies ended, two offshoot groups attempted to access I-25, clashing with officers who used riot gear, smoke, and pepper balls to repel them. One group threw rocks at police, and one protester started a small fire.

Denver police made 35 arrests in connection with the protests. Despite the confrontations, both police and organizers described the day’s events as largely peaceful.

Article Icon 1Safeway Union Begins Limited Strike

Safeway employees began a limited strike on Sunday at stores in Estes Park, Fountain, and Pueblo, as well as a distribution center in Denver, following months of stalled contract negotiations.

According to UFCW Local 7, a limited rollout is meant to raise public awareness while reducing “hardship on shoppers and workers alike.” The union warned the strike could expand if talks remain deadlocked.

Several other locations have already voted to authorize a strike, while a vote in some cities is expected this week. See a list of locations here.

Article Icon 1Lightning Strike Prompts Record Rescue

Rescuers picked up two men struck by lightning from the 14,300-foot Torreys Peak on Thursday in what could be the highest helicopter rescues on state record.

The climbers first called for help after getting off-route on a technical ascent. Rescuers guided them back on course, only to receive a second call when the men, now atop the summit, reported they’d been struck by lightning.

Crews used a Blackhawk helicopter to retrieve the more seriously injured hiker, who was unresponsive, before coming back for the second. Both were taken to hospitals, where one remained in fair condition as of Friday.

Rescuers believe Colorado’s previous record for helicopter rescues was 13,700 feet. Such rescues become challenging at high altitudes due to the effects of thin air.
